How much does a WoF cost in Auckland?

A Warrant of Fitness at Precision Automotive in New Lynn, Auckland costs $60, flat. That is the full NZ Transport Agency inspection for a light vehicle: brakes, tyres, steering, lights, seat belts, glazing, exhaust and structure. There is no government-set WoF price in New Zealand. Each provider sets its own, and govt.nz says a basic light-vehicle WoF usually costs between $50 and $90.

What a WoF costs in Auckland

No one sets a national price for a Warrant of Fitness. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi appoints the inspecting organisations, and each one charges what it charges. The government’s own guide puts a basic WoF for a light vehicle at usually between $50 and $90 (govt.nz).

At Precision Automotive on Portage Road it is $60, flat. That sits inside the government’s range. One price for the inspection, with no add-ons stacked on top.

What the $60 covers

Every WoF follows the same national standard, the Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual. The inspector works through eight areas:

  1. Brakes and suspension: pad and disc wear, hoses, handbrake, shocks, bushings and ball joints.
  2. Tyres and wheels: tread depth (1.5mm minimum), cuts, bulges and wheel security.
  3. Steering: play in the wheel, tie rod ends and power steering.
  4. Lights and wipers: headlights, brake lights, indicators, reverse lights, wipers and washers.
  5. Seat belts and airbags: webbing, buckles, retractors, anchorages and the airbag warning light.
  6. Glass and visibility: windscreen damage in the driver’s view, mirrors and the demister.
  7. Exhaust: leaks, mountings and smoke.
  8. Body and structure: rust in structural areas, doors, bumpers and towbar.

What changes what you pay

The inspection price stays at $60. Three things can change the total:

  • Repairs to pass. If the car fails, the fix is extra. That is true at every WoF provider, not just us: govt.nz is clear the inspection fee does not include repairs. We show you the part on the car and quote the fix before any work starts. Small things like a bulb or a wiper blade can often be sorted while you wait.
  • When you come back for the retest. A failed car has 28 days to be retested at the same inspecting organisation (govt.nz). Leave it longer and it needs a new full inspection. Get it fixed and booked back inside that window.
  • SuperGold. SuperGold cardholders get 15% off WoF and labour here. Show the card in person when you drop the car off. The offer is listed on the official SuperGold site.

How often you will pay it

How often your car needs a WoF depends on when it was first registered (govt.nz):

  • New cars: the first WoF lasts until the third anniversary of first registration.
  • Over 3 years, first registered on or after 1 January 2000: every 12 months.
  • First registered before 1 January 2000, and under 40 years old: every 6 months.
  • Vintage and veteran vehicles: their own 12-month rule.

If your car is over three years old and was first registered in 2000 or later, the honest yearly cost of staying legal is one $60 inspection, plus whatever it turns up.
